Cruise The Gorge Weekend 2018

Cruise The Gorge – August 10-12, 2018

Three Days, Four Exciting Events!

One of the most important things an organization like Main Street can do to help the vitality of a community is to create partnerships with other organizations who also have residents and visitors in their best interest. In one of the most organized endeavors ever witnessed, Main Street had the pleasure of partnering with The Dalles Rotary and Mid-Columbia Car Club on The Dalles’ annual Cruise The Gorge Weekend.

This event is an awesome slice of Americana that has the potential to become a premier event for our town. Classic car cruise, car show in the shade at Sorosis and drag races packs our town to what feels like capacity. This is an amazing opportunity to promote our downtown to visitors who are not familiar with what The Dalles has to offer. One of the key components to this important weekend is the car cruise through downtown.

The 2017 Neon Cruise

A closed loop cruise reserved strictly for registered cars was an addition in 2017 and Main Street was given the responsibility of ensuring the success of this daring endeavor. It has worked for other communities. Why could it not work in The Dalles?

Northwest Cherry Festival

2017's Booth for Business Owners

It was decided that instead of showcasing Main Street during the festival days, the organization would collaborate with the downtown businesses in order to give them a platform of visibility. After Jeremiah came down and helped set up the entryway arch and large tents with Chamber volunteers, Main Street was able to reserve a tent for businesses to come down in incremental time slots in order to promote themselves to festival goers. It was a great opportunity for them to be seen and chat with community members who may not know of their existence downtown. Some of the business owners featured a promotion, while Mel Mendez, owner of Gameopoly, brought some of his stock to sell. Carole Ruise, owner of Pawsh Spa, brought homemade dog treats and was more than grateful for opportunity to spend some time meeting new potential clientele.

The Northwest Cherry Festival takes place in downtown The Dalles every Spring for three consecutive days. The Festival includes the Gorge’s largest parade, classic car show, a 10k race, and lots of great local music and bands. There is also cherry sampling with the Oregon Cherry Growers, craft vendors, agriculture job fair, and Davis Show’s Carnival. You don’t want to miss the crowning of Cherry Festival Royalty at Mid-Columbia Senior Center’s Breakfast Saturday Morning before the parade, either!

Annual Downtown Spring Clean-up

2017- 6 Students Save the Day!

In spring of 2017 we were coordinating with a leadership class from The Dalles High School in order to gather a large group of students for the annual Downtown Clean Up. We had acquired a small grant in order to help pay for cleaning supplies. Main Street was lucky enough to utilize this connection with The Dalles Community School.

What was meant to be a job for nearly thirty high school students turned into a valiant effort by a group of six community school students all working with enthusiasm to clean the sidewalks of their hometown while visions of Chinese food, generously donated by Canton Wok, danced in their heads. With bellies full, it was it was amazing to see those students feel a great sense of accomplishment having come out on a Saturday to serve their community.

Light Up Downtown

Each year The Dalles Main Street invites our community to get into the spirit of the holiday season by transforming downtown into a winter wonderland by putting up Christmas lights on the street light poles throughout the downtown blocks.

Celebrate the Holidays Downtown

SantaCon Pub Crawl

In an effort to feature our local nightlife, SantaCon was born in 2017 thanks to the idea and efforts of the organization’s Promotion Committee. The Dalles Main Street brought an event known nationwide that happens in so many communities, large and small.

The committee was excited to promote an opportunity to dress up as either Mr. or Mrs. Claus and visit our premier, local establishments to enjoy a beverage. This event was promoted to our community members who may not be familiar with what amenities downtown has to offer and also to members of the Oregon Agritourism Network who were visiting The Dalles for conference facilitated by Travel Oregon. The organization received positive feedback from establishments such Route 30 Bottles and Brews and Freebridge Brewing for increasing their customer base for that evening in the form of folks dressed as the man in red himself.

"Santa In The Downtown"

What Main Street loves most about this event, which takes place on two Saturdays, is that it is a wonderful draw for families who do not normally visit our downtown to come to the heart of The Dalles and realize what great, year-round shopping opportunities we have to offer.

2017's Annual "Santa In The Downtown"

What made 2017's event tremendous was the opportunity to feature a vacant location on 2nd St. that had never been utilized in this regard.

Community members were thrilled to see the old Tammy’s Floral building rejuvenated with life after laying empty for so long. The Dalles Main Street is thankful to The City of The Dalles for allowing us to borrow the building for that span of time to bring joy to all of the families that visited.

2016's Annual "Santa In The Downtown"

The annual “Santa In The Downtown” 2016 event was particular special because we had the pleasure of partnering not only with Wasco County Library, but also Home At Last Humane Society. Children and parents had the chance to say hello to a few furry friends who were up for adoption. All of our volunteers got to see some special moments when families opted to adopt and take home their newest addition to the family.

In 2016, the annual event utilized the vacant Griffith Motors building on 3rd St. and turned it into a holiday wonderland complete with window paint depicting a scene of a quaint, snowy downtown by Denae Manion.
